The work produced in my practice takes a variety of forms. There is a process to the creation of work that starts in the studio; from drawings and sketches it evolves to sculpture and installations. The main focus of my work is on textiles - with the development and experimentation of materials and skills my focus currently. However, the ideas have to come from somewhere, some work therefore takes the form of drawing, painting or writing. I have recently expanded my skill set to encompass not just my physical artistic endeavours but a digital one too. This documentation of my practice to date, explores all aspects of my practice.
Textile Experimentation
Graduating in 2024, brought about a shift in my practice in 2025. Adapting to the shift of moving back home and no longer having an accessible studio, caused my practice to adapt too. Therefore a new exploration of textiles began, taking into consideration the new location, environment and access to materials and tools.
Methods new and old have been intertwined in this new venture, from tufting and sewing to weaving and free motion embroidery. A wider range of documentation of these can be found on my instagram page @sineadmw.art.
For me the studio is where all my making occurs. Exploring and experimenting with materials, subject matter and presentation is just some of what happens here. Making spaces is integral to my work evolving, I learn through making. The physical process of trying, failing, changing your mind and discussion with peers helps me to evolve and try new things. Although the creation of my work is a more solitary activity, I aim to create something that audiences can feel a part of, that is why conversation and interaction with my work is vital through all stages of their development. The studio is a safe space where this can happen.
Development
2D - Drawing
All my works begins in a 2-dimensional format, whether that's a drawing, sketch or a collage. Often these works are states of progress, the starting point for a textile piece, other times they are inspired from primary research. Starting is putting pen to paper, but it can be the hardest thing to do, so some of these pieces are just the beginning.
Digital
The most recent element of my practice is my digital development. I prefer to make using my hands, something physical that I can feel and share with others, however, being able to use the digital tools I have available, have enabled me to go about my practice is a different manner. Mainly as a tool for design and preparation, my digital/graphic design pieces are small and usually made to aid the process of a larger work or projects, aiding greatly with logistics. Some of these works have been used as projections to start murals and tufted works, others have been used as signage.
My digital works also cover website design and management, as well as video editing and social media marketing.
